A long-time hit man who has been inactive for some while takes on an assignment concerning an unfaithful wife in Lawrence Block's novella, Keller's Hat. However, things are not as simple as they appear and Keller may find himself in danger as he tries to remedy what seems to be a botched assignment.

Keller's friend and long time associate contacts him about a possible hit job. A husband believes his wife is having an affair and wants the lover removed. Keller is reluctant, but the money is good so he agrees. He buys himself a fedora before leaving.

Surveillance of the wife reveals she isn't above leaving a poor grocery boy with damp pants after a hand job. She also picks up a Marlboro type guy for fun in the afternoon. After Keller verifies the afternoon tryst, he arranges to take the man out, notifies his handler, and leaves town.

He soon gets a call from the handler that apparently the wife is still trysting in the afternoon. Keller returns and encounters the Marlboro Man's buddies. He plants a few seeds and waits.

Readers will like Block's attention to detail and Keller's professionalism. The denouement provides a satisfying conclusion.

The novella is another in a deluxe hardback series from Subterranean Press of acknowledged masters in various fiction genres.
