Yappy Hour, by Diana Orgain, takes place in a small coastal town in Northern California. Maggie Patterson recently moved back to town from New York City to be close to her sister and her uncle, and to find a job with a cruise line that recently started business in the town.
Maggie's sister, Rachel, owns a local bar called The Wine and Bark where people bring their dogs. They celebrate "yappy hour" instead of "happy hour". The drinks are named with cute dog-related names, like the Fire Hydrant, the Salty Dog, and the Greyhound. Shortly after arriving in town, Maggie gets a text from her sister saying that she will be out of town for a few days and asking Maggie to mind the bar.
Not a dog enthusiast, Maggie is unhappy but heads to the bar to help her sister. When Maggie arrives, she finds the Yolanda, the town gossip, along with her dog Beepo, straddling a dead body. Yolanda and Maggie work together to call the police and report the crime, which appears to be murder.
Now enters the young and hansom town policeman to solve the crime. It turns out the dead man was one of Rachel's former boyfriends and the part owner of the business across the patio from the bar. Enter second hansom-eligible bachelor, the dead man's business partner.
The rest of the story progresses as Rachel gradually befriends the locals, including their dogs even though she does not want to, dates both of the town’s hansom men, and tries to solve the crime and absolve her sister who is an obvious suspect.
Yappy Hour is certainly a chick book ... note the standard plot:
