In Tracy Dunham's Yes, the River Knows, Tal Jefferson, a formerly successful attorney, has come home to lick her wounds and shut out the world. Her friends won't let her. Her secretary/assistant/lawyer in training, June, is a particular thorn in her side when she tries wallow in self pity and misery. June is an amazing woman: she's immaculately dressed and groomed at all times (tough to manage in the sultry south); she is efficient beyond words; and she tells Tal what Tal's going to do and then gives Tal that look until Tal does it. But now June stands of accused of murdering her dishonorably discharged husband. Tal thought June was divorced.

There are more surprises in store for Tal when it comes to June. Seems the very fancy diamond ring the not quite ex-husband gave June the night he was murdered is stolen Russian goods – probably from the Tzars. And the gun used to kill the no good, lying, dead almost ex-husband? Seems someone gave it to June the night after the murder and asked her to keep it until her dead almost ex-husband came to get it. Oh, and by the way, June has a married boyfriend in jail for hit and run (which he claims he didn't do!). Tal didn't know any of that. What else is she going to find out about June?

Then there's Travis – an old high school acquaintance of Tal's who's come home for reasons that aren't clear. Travis is a successful, sought after, highly-paid, portrait painter. And he wants to paint Tal. But he won't say why he's home. He's definitely interested in Tal. Why? Because of Tal, or to stay close to what Tal is finding out about June and her no account almost ex husband?

This book is not funny. It is not a cozy. There are no warm fuzzies here. But there are good characters, a solid story, and a book that leaves the reader wanting more.

I highly recommend this book. It is hard to put down once you start, so make sure you have time set aside to read when you start it.
